Software-defined solutions for transcoding, encapsulation and metadata management

Imagine Communications, empowering the media and entertainment industry through transformative innovation, is again providing the live streaming and Video on Demand (VOD) encoding infrastructure for IBC TV, the news and information service produced on site and distributed across multiple platforms. The IBC TV infrastructure, built specifically for the annual show and exhibition, will use Imagine Communications’ software-defined solutions powered by Zenium™, the company’s pure microservices platform.

IBC TV features live interviews and debates, coverage of key conference sessions, and a large number of features and reports on issues emerging from the exhibition. A portion of the content will be produced from the IBC IP Showcase studio, which features a live all-IP workflow based on the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) roadmap and the SMPTE ST-2110 family of standards. The rest of the production and distribution for IBC TV is in a dedicated studio centre in hall 13 of IBC.

Imagine Communications’ SelenioFlex™ Live is providing the core encoding and transcoding functionality for IBC TV. Workflow customisation using Zenium microservices components provides the automatic generation, management and publishing of metadata, ensuring that the content is available as VOD packages as quickly as possible after publishing or live streaming for the IBC’s YouTube channel, Twitter, Periscope and Facebook platforms. VOD content is uploaded along with production metadata to enable a rich player experience on the IBC website

“Even in the broadcast industry, what we do at IBC TV is remarkably challenging,” said Sue Robinson, producer of IBC TV. “We provide a 24-hour rolling streamed output, and over the course of six days in Amsterdam we generate and publish literally hundreds of packages. We can only do this with the support of technical partners, like Imagine Communications, who we know will provide very reliable, high-performance infrastructure.”

“IBC TV is a perfect example of a busy and mission-critical TV operation, where every visitor to IBC can watch it as it happens,” said Glodina Lostanlen, chief marketing officer at Imagine Communications. “We are proud to support IBC TV, and it gives us a wonderful opportunity to showcase the power and performance of a software-defined distribution workflow.”

IBC TV is live throughout the event, which is held at the RAI Centre in Amsterdam from 14 – 19 September. The IBC TV production base can be found at 13.A08, and the Imagine Communications stand is 4.A01.
