Megahertz to provide design and integration services to international news network as part of competitive tender win for new all-IP production facility

Megahertz Ltd, the trusted partner for systems integration with years of experience in delivering cost effective, imaginative designs and solutions for fixed and mobile applications, has been appointed by a large American news-based broadcaster to implement, build, test and deliver the IP workflows supporting its large-scale London offices and European HQ relocation to Old Street in Central London.

During the project, expected to complete during the course of 2019, Megahertz will help the broadcaster with the challenges of IP implementation, including guiding and supporting the team’s commitment to the SMPTE 2110 roadmap.

The relocated HQ will be responsible for the production, contribution, studio programmes, the support of ENG/film crews, editing for its news channels and digital platform, as well as for the organisation’s sponsored programming.

Megahertz won the tender after a rigorous and extensive selection process: “We were chosen because of our sound understanding of the customer’s scope of the work. They also saw excellent value in our design and appreciated the fact that we kept our costs transparent,” said Jon Flay, managing director, Megahertz.

Megahertz’s key responsibilities are for the design and implementation of the end-to-end camera chain, edit workflows, logistics support and installation of the facility’s IP networking, with factory testing and system fabrication to be completed at its Ely-based headquarters before delivery.

The architecture underpinning the facility is designed around an Evertz IP infrastructure and built on an array of new technologies from suppliers like Calrec, CatDV, IPE, Leyard, Object Matrix, OpenDrives, Sony, Vizrt and Ward-Beck.

‘Out-of-the-box’ solutions were chosen for audio because of a desire for AES67/ST2110-30 over that of more established Dante solutions. Despite its infancy, SMPTE 2110-30 has been successfully implemented by a range of suppliers and the system was designed with this in mind.

Ward-Beck’s PreMo mic amplifier interfaces were chosen because they offer SMPTE 2110-30 and will work in collaboration with Calrec audio over an IP interface and the Evertz infrastructure.

“This HQ relocation opened the way for our customer to trigger a complete technology refresh and their goal has been to create an end-to-end IP workflow, running from the glass of the camera to the glass of the consumer,” said Flay. “An all-IP production facility will give them more flexibility and agility in the context of programme making and news reporting. They are at the very cutting edge of broadcast technology right now when it comes to SMPTE ST 2110. Defining how they roll it out and use it is a challenge that we’re looking forward to helping with.”
